Challenges Treating Type 2 Diabetes in Children

William Tamborlane, MD, Professor and Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, discusses Pediatric Diabetes Consortium recommendations for solving crisis in care for kids and adolescents with type 2 diabetes.

Treatment options are limited for these patients. Early in the course of disease treatments work, but additional therapies needed as time goes on to control the disease. About half of pediatric patients are unable to maintain adequate control of their disease with maximum doses of metformin after three to four years.
