Beta-Cell Preservation in Prediabetes, Early Type 2 Diabetes

Thomas A. Buchanan, MD, of the University of California, Los Angeles, discusses pancreatic beta cell preservation in early type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. He also elaborates on how fat biology can drive beta-cell failure and how one guiding principle in preserving beta cells should be changing fat biology or modifying its metabolic effects through weight loss or other medications. Further, Dr. Buchanan talks about how rising HbA1c is a marker of deterioration of beta-cell function. He concludes by discussing ways to treat deteriorating beta-cell function.
